The main building, ordered by Don Gonzalo of Valladares between 1618 and 1634, was preceded by a Romanic chapel, which was rebuilt at the beginning of the 15th century and put under the patronage of Saint Benedict, perhaps due to the connections that its mother house, Saint Adrian of Vilariño, already had in the10th century with the Monastery of Celanova. Still in the second half of the 18th century the 5th viscount of Fefiñanes and 5th Marquis of Figueroa, Don Francisco Javier Pardo of Figueroa, raised the gable wall and the towers from the foundations.
